Principal Engineers


Our principals are co-owners of the company with a combined 126 years of commitment to Schaaf & Wheeler. But they are more than financial investors. Principals regularly lead teams on high-level projects and provide mentorship to junior and assistant engineers. With hard work and dedication, you could become a co-owner one day, too.

Senior Engineers


Senior engineers run their own projects, lead teams, and manage day-to-day tasks. They also interact with clients regularly to verify our products meet stakeholder expectations.

Associate Engineers


Our associate engineers do the heavy technical lifting on projects. With tools like AutoCAD and ArcGIS, they ensure our drafts and reports are developed correctly and efficiently. They use models such as Innovyze ICM, HEC-RAS, InfoWater, and many others to solve complex engineering problems.

Junior & Assistant Engineers


Junior engineers make sure our analyses and designs are completed in cost-effective and innovative ways that meet client expectations, with full support from the project team. Junior and assistant engineers work on high-level projects. Associate Water Resources Engineer

We are seeking and Associate Water Resources Civil Engineer candidates, to be based in of one of our offices: Santa Clara, San Francisco, or Salinas.

Want to speed up your career growth? This role provides exposure to a wide variety of project types and sizes.

In your first six months, you’re likely to work on C3 pump station designs, in collaboration with senior staff and principal engineers. Long-term, you’ll probably work on multi-million dollar infrastructure projects including pump station design, pipeline design, levee design, and trash capture device design, both in the private and public sector. You may also gain experience with sea level rise, planning studies, floodplain assessments, water system modeling, condition assessments, green infrastructure, and much more.

Responsibilities:

  • Work will include extreme precipitation (atmospheric river) modeling, sea-level rise (SLR) and climate change adaptation, and severe storm resiliency.
  • You’ll independently advance multiple projects at the same time, performing research and reaching out for help as needed.
  • You’ll effectively manage your time to meet project milestones/deadlines.
  • As an Associate Engineer, you will also use your knowledge and skills to guide and train junior level staff.

Minimum Requirements:

We are looking for 2 to 6 years of strong, well-rounded technical experience delivering detailed designs, plans, and specs for new and rehabilitated municipal and private utility infrastructure projects; well and tank design; and pipeline and pump station design for storm drain, potable water, recycled water, and wastewater systems. Solid experience designing pressure and gravity pipe systems; assessing pipeline conditions; preparing contracts (including plans, specs, and cost estimates); and providing construction support [KM3]. Experience in every category is not required, but it is preferred.

Associate Engineers must have a BSCE, BSC&EE, or BSME; a PE license; and the ability to manage projects and delegate work to junior staff. Compensation:

Schaaf & Wheeler offers full-time positions:

Senior Engineer exempt salary will range from a per pay period (pre-tax) amount of $4,807.69 to $6,346.15 (which is equivalent of $125,000 to $165,000 annually).

All final pay decisions are to be made by the hiring manager, based upon the experience of the final candidate.

Associate Engineer – Hydrologic & Hydraulic Engineering and Modeling

We are currently seeking potential applicants for Associate Civil Engineer – Hydrologic & Hydraulic Engineering and Modeling, to be based out of our San Francisco or Santa Clara, CA office location.

In this role, you would apply your skills to establish and apply hydrologic and hydraulic models to engineering problems, advancing both your technical and project management skills. You would be part of a team working on all aspects of a project, from analysis and design calculations to the production of improvement plans and construction support.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) with colleagues, clients, and project team members.
  • Manage projects independently and delegate work to junior team members.
  • Work with our broad range of clients to help them understand complex H&H concepts.
  • Perform tasks: FEMA floodplain mapping, bridge scour, bridge hydraulics, storm drain master planning, floodproofing, and open channel design.
  • Keeping up to date on hydrologic and hydraulic model advancements and scour protection technologies.
  • Site visits in Northern California are an active part of this position.
  • Other assigned tasks as needed.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Professional Engineering (PE) license.
  • Have graduated with a BSCE and have 3 to 7 years of applicable working experience.
  • 2 to 5 years of technical writing skills used for report preparation.
  • Knowledge of HEC-RAS (1d and 2d) for hydraulic modeling, and advanced HEC-HMS hydrologic modeling skills.
  • Experience with stormwater modeling software. GIS skills are necessary.

Experience Preferred:

Experience with Innovyze ICM, MIKE+EPA, SWMM, InfoSWMM, XPSWMM, and Flo2D.Experience working with geomorphologists on channel stability and restoration projects.

Compensation:

This full-time positionhas a non-exempt pay range of $45.00 to $60.00 per hour. All final pay decisions are to be made by the hiring manager, based upon the experience of the final candidate.
