Principal Engineers


Our principals are co-owners of the company with a combined 126 years of commitment to Schaaf & Wheeler. But they are more than financial investors. Principals regularly lead teams on high-level projects and provide mentorship to junior and assistant engineers. With hard work and dedication, you could become a co-owner one day, too.

Senior Engineers


Senior engineers run their own projects, lead teams, and manage day-to-day tasks. They also interact with clients regularly to verify our products meet stakeholder expectations.

Associate Engineers


Our associate engineers do the heavy technical lifting on projects. With tools like AutoCAD and ArcGIS, they ensure our drafts and reports are developed correctly and efficiently. They use models such as Innovyze ICM, HEC-RAS, InfoWater, and many others to solve complex engineering problems.

Junior & Assistant Engineers


Junior engineers make sure our analyses and designs are completed in cost-effective and innovative ways that meet client expectations, with full support from the project team. Junior and assistant engineers work on high-level projects. Junior Engineer:

A junior engineer will have 0 to 2 years of experience in the water resources engineering field. Though experience is not a requirement, a strong preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated water resources coursework and training/exposure to software used daily in our practice. As a junior engineer at Schaaf & Wheeler you’ll have the opportunity to work closely with senior engineers and gain hands-on experience in a variety of aspects of water resources engineering. An EIT certificate is required for this role.

Compensation: This full-time position has a non-exempt pay range of $37.00 to $42.00 per hour.*

An assistant engineer will have 1 to 3 years of experience in the water resources engineering field. This role offers a chance to take on more responsibilities and play an increased role in engineering analysis and design. You will work closely with project teams to develop engineering solutions, perform hydraulic and hydrologic analyses, and contribute to the development of design documents. An EIT certificate is required for this role.

Compensation: This full-time position has a non-exempt pay range of $41.00 to $48.00 per hour.*

The associate engineer will play a pivotal role in project success and will support many technical aspects of various projects. You’ll work closely with senior staff and may perform project management where appropriate.

Compensation: This full-time position has a non-exempt pay range of $46.00 to $65.00 per hour.*

Senior Engineer:

A senior engineer will have 7 to 15 years of experience in the water resources engineering field. This position requires a Professional Engineer (PE)license. This position is ideal for an experienced professional with a proven track record in water resources engineering. You will lead the analysis and/or design of complex water resources projects, provide technical expertise and guidance to project teams, and cultivate client relationships. This role involves project management, business development, and the ability to lead a diverse team of in-house engineers as well as specialty sub-consultants.

Compensation: This full-time position has an exempt pay range of $4,807.69 to $6,730.77 per pay period (which is equivalent to $125,000 to $175,000 annually).

Deputy Program Manager

Schaaf & Wheeler is currently seeking applicants for a full-time Deputy Program Manager to be part of the Anderson Dam Seismic Retrofit Project (ADSRP) program management team. The Senior Project Administrator will work under the umbrella of the ADSRP Program Management Consultant firm Black & Veatch, to which Schaaf & Wheeler has been a project subconsultant since 2012. Schaaf & Wheeler will consider only local Northern California/Bay Area applicants for this position.

About ADSRP

The ADSRP is presently one of the most important dam safety infrastructure projects in the U.S. A critical and complex multi-year project, the ADSRP involves deconstructing and reconstructing Anderson Dam in order to improve reliability and safety and to return the reservoir to its optimal 90,000-acre-foot storage capacity. The project is nearing design completion.

The ADSRP Reporting Structure

The Deputy Program Manager will be part of an organizational structure that includes dam owner Valley Water as Program Manager; the Black & Veatch Team (including Schaaf & Wheeler) as Program Management Consultant; the Design Team, the Construction Management Team, and the Contractor.

The Program Management Team Responsibilities

Overall, the Black & Veatch Program Management Consulting (PMC) Team provides management and technical support to Valley Water in the areas of environmental, permitting, design, real estate, stakeholder engagement, and financing. The PMC team has primary responsibilities for risk management, quality management, project management and administration, managing the independent Board of Consultants (BOC) and other senior-level advisors, coordination and liaison with public oversight agencies the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the California Department of Water Resources’ Division of Safety of Dams (DSOD).

Deputy Program Manager Responsibilities

The Deputy Program Manager responsibilities are many and varied and are geared to preserving the project’s forward momentum. The Deputy Program Manager will:

  • Coordinate between Valley Water’s project manager, the PMC team and the other consultants and contractors (Design, Planning/CEQA, CM, and Construction)
  • Track and manage the District-approved Project Plan, and coordinate the periodic updating of the supporting plans.
  • Routinely monitor and track schedule. Prepare quarterly updates to the Master Project Schedule.
  • Maintain routine contact and communication with the District’s Project Manager including preparation and participation in weekly administrative and technical briefings.
  • Assist with preparation of Monthly Project Status Reports and participate in monthly meetings with the Dam Safety and Capital Delivery Deputy Operating Officer.
  • Coordinate and participate in constructability reviews.
  • Coordinate and participate in Risk Workshops and Potential Failure Mode Analysis Workshops.
  • Assist with preparation and presentations on Project-level status reports to the District’s management, internal stakeholders and Board.
  • Participate in regular coordination meetings with District staff and representatives of the DSOD and FERC. Prepare draft correspondence to DSOD/FERC. Facilitate and coordinate comment responses with the DSOD and FERC on key work products.
  • Participate in Project-level meetings with environmental resource agencies.
  • Assist the District in preparing for public outreach planning and implementation.
  • Coordinate work efforts between the Board of Consultants (BOC), FERC, DSOD, and Design Consultant.

Deputy Program Manager Requirements

  • Licensed professional civil engineer in California.
  • Must have 10-15 years of previous engineering experience in positions of increasing responsibility.
  • Previous experience managing and coordinating multiple team members and consultants.
  • Previous experience with heavy civil works infrastructure projects.
  • Be self-directed, a self-starter with strong ability to perform all tasks with little direction or direct supervision.
  • Effective verbal and written communications.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and on-line data tools and platforms (Zoom, Teams, SharePoint, iBackup, etc.) with ability to learn new software quickly and efficiently.

Deputy Program Manager Desired Skills

  • Work experience within a public agency, either as an employee or embedded staff.
  • Experience obtaining state and/or federal regulatory permits.
  • Construction management and contracting experience
  • Experience preparing staff reports and presenting to elected Boards and Commissions

Education

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field.

Work Location

The primary work location is Valley Water’s Headquarters, which is 5750 Almaden Expressway,Santa Clara, CA 95118, for three days per week and the ability to work remotely at other times.

Compensation

This full-time position has a pay range of $62-73 per hour, depending on the experience and at the discretion of the hiring manager.
