Principal Engineers


Our principals are co-owners of the company with a combined 126 years of commitment to Schaaf & Wheeler. But they are more than financial investors. Senior Engineers


Senior engineers run their own projects, lead teams, and manage day-to-day tasks. They also interact with clients regularly to verify our products meet stakeholder expectations.

Associate Engineers


Our associate engineers do the heavy technical lifting on projects. With tools like AutoCAD and ArcGIS, they ensure our drafts and reports are developed correctly and efficiently. They use models such as Innovyze ICM, HEC-RAS, InfoWater, and many others to solve complex engineering problems.

Junior & Assistant Engineers

Schaaf & Wheeler is looking for a highly motivated GIS Specialist to assist on various water resources engineering projects. The specialist will create, modify and analyze geodata of utility pipelines, channels, watersheds, soil characteristics, land uses, floodplains, survey data, LiDAR data and other hydrography.

Typical project tasks to include: preparing geographic data for analysis of flood control, stormwater, wastewater and water systems; spatial analyses of datasets; cartography for report and presentation figures; and management of geodatabases (vector and raster

Job Requirements:

  • A minimum of an associate or bachelor’s degree and 1-5 years of GIS experience, preferably related to engineering and/or infrastructure.
  • A science or engineering degree is a plus.
  • The ability to communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) with clients and project team members.
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS is required. Experience with Spatial Analyst and 3D Analysist a plus.
  • Proficiency with MS Office, particularly Excel and Access is required.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or Adobe Creative Suite desirable.

Junior, Assistant, Associate and Senior Water Infrastructure Engineers

We are looking for potential applicants for Junior, Assistant, Associate and Senior Water Infrastructure Civil Engineer positions, to be based out of our Truckee, CA office.

Compensation:

This full-time position, in a Junior or Assistant level, will have an hourly pay rate range between $37.00 - $43.00 per hour, and for an Associate level the pay rate range will be between $44.00 -$55.00 per hour. For a Senior level position, the gross amount per pay period will be between $4,807.69 and $5,384.62 (equivalent to $125,000 to $140,000) DOE with the final determination to be made by the hiring manager.

This role offers the challenge of developing detailed design documents for unique water infrastructure projects that require creative and innovative thinking, research, and communication to solve new and complex design issues.

In your first six months, you’ll evaluate and design small- to large-scale water utility infrastructure projects throughout California, in collaboration with senior staff and principal engineers. This will include preparation of drawings (AutoCAD), specifications, and cost estimates. Your role will also include conducting field investigations, providing construction support services, writing technical reports, completing hydrologic calculations and models, and coordinating projects. You’ll have the opportunity to learn and use GIS and modeling software.

Long-term, you’ll manage projects, perform as lead design engineer, and assist and mentor junior engineers. You’ll learn (or apply your experience) to rehabilitate and replace pipeline and pump station infrastructure. With exposure to a wide range of projects, including asset management, hydrologic modeling, channel restoration, and infrastructure design, you’ll have the opportunity to manage a broad portfolio of interesting work supporting a multitude of clients.

Responsibilities:

  • You’ll independently advance multiple projects at the same time, performing research and reaching out for help as needed
  • You’ll effectively manage your time to meet project milestones/deadlines
  • A Professional Engineering (PE) license is required for Associate level positions and higher.

Minimum Requirements - Junior Engineers:

While experience is not required, an EIT certificate is. Solid water resources engineering coursework is essential, as is a passion for this profession. Previous civil engineering work experience including internships and participation in engineering-related extracurricular activities is preferred.

Senior Engineer – Hydrologic & Hydraulic Engineering and Modeling

In this role, you’ll apply your advanced level skills to establish and apply hydrologic and hydraulic models to engineering problems, advancing both your technical and project management skills. You’ll be part of a team working on all aspects of a project, from analysis and design calculations to the production of improvement plans and construction support.

As a licensed PE with a BSCE and 5-10+ years of experience, you’ll be comfortable managing projects on your own and delegating work to junior staff.   • You’ll independently advance multiple projects at the same time, performing research and reaching out for help as needed.

Minimum Requirements - Junior Engineers:

  • A minimum of a BS in Civil Engineering and 0-2 years of relevant experience.
  • EIT certificate is a must have.
  • Effective time management skills to complete work on time and within budget.
  • Commitment to collaboration as a strong team player.
  • Keen attentiveness to detail.
  • Enthusiasm to learn new engineering tasks and the ability to retain this knowledge.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) with colleagues, clients, and sub-consultants.
  • Interest in becoming a licensed professional civil engineer (if not already one).
  • Good technical writing skills — you must be able to convey engineering concepts to non-technical personnel and document technical aspects of your projects.

Preferred Requirements

Proficiency with AutoCAD is a plus.

Compensation:

This full-time position has a pay range of $37.00-39.00 per hour, depending on the experience of the final candidate, and at the discretion of the hiring manager.
