Principal Engineers


Our principals are co-owners of the company with a combined 126 years of commitment to Schaaf & Wheeler. But they are more than financial investors. Senior Engineers


Senior engineers run their own projects, lead teams, and manage day-to-day tasks. They also interact with clients regularly to verify our products meet stakeholder expectations.

Associate Engineers


Our associate engineers do the heavy technical lifting on projects. With tools like AutoCAD and ArcGIS, they ensure our drafts and reports are developed correctly and efficiently. They use models such as Innovyze ICM, HEC-RAS, InfoWater, and many others to solve complex engineering problems.

Junior & Assistant Engineers


Junior engineers make sure our analyses and designs are completed in cost-effective and innovative ways that meet client expectations, with full support from the project team. Senior Project Administrator

Location: San Jose, CA

Schaaf & Wheeler is currently seeking applicants for a full-time Senior Project Administrator to be part of the Anderson Dam Seismic Retrofit Project (ADSRP) program management team. The Senior Project Administrator will work under the umbrella of the ADSRP Program Management Consultant firm Black & Veatch, to which Schaaf & Wheeler has been a project subconsultant since 2012. Schaaf & Wheeler will consider only local Northern California/Bay Area applicants for this position.

Must have:

  • 5-7 years of experience working in a Project/Senior Project Administrator role or equivalent position.
  • Previous experience providing coordination and support to multiple team leads and managers.
  • Experience with document writing and editing and ability to provide examples.

About ADSRP

The ADSRP is presently one of the most important dam safety infrastructure projects in the U.S. A critical and complex multi-year project, the ADSRP involves deconstructing and reconstructing Anderson Dam in order to improve reliability and safety and to return the reservoir to its optimal 90,000-acre-foot storage capacity. The project is nearing design completion.

The ADSRP Reporting Structure

The Senior Project Administrator will be part of an organizational structure that includes dam owner Valley Water as Program Manager; the Black & Veatch Team (including Schaaf & Wheeler) as Program Management Consultant; the Design Team, the Construction Management Team, and the Contractor.

The Program Management Team Responsibilities

Overall, the Black & Veatch Program Management Consulting (PMC) Team provides management and technical support to Valley Water in the areas of environmental, permitting, design, real estate, stakeholder engagement, and financing. The PMC team has primary responsibilities for risk management, quality management, project management and administration, managing the independent Board of Consultants (BOC) and other senior-level advisors, coordination and liaison with public oversight agencies the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the California Department of Water Resources’ Division of Safety of Dams (DSOD).

Senior Project Administrator Responsibilities

The Senior Project Administrator responsibilities are many and varied and are geared to preserving the project’s forward momentum. The Senior Project Administrator will:

  • Be a liaison between the PMC and Valley Water’s administrative team
  • Advise the project team on administrative procedures and protocols
  • Assist with the development, review, and implementation of policies, procedures, work instructions, processes and systems related to the project.
  • Apply professional communications skills to gather, analyze and interpret data to support the project activities and objectives.
  • Keep all documents associated with the project organized on the Valley Water server.
  • Serve as main point of contact for client and public agency relations; interfacing with regulatory personnel (an integral part of this position) to foster positive and productive relationships.
  • Manage the production, circulation and review of reports and correspondence in addition to on-going coordination with Valley Water staff.
  • Draft formal correspondence letters and emails to oversight agencies FERC, DSOD, and the independent Board of Consultants (BOC), and work with the Valley Water project engineer or project manager on iterations until final. Once final, manage the formal Valley Water approval process by routing the items via DocuSign.
  • Complete federal filings with the FERC.
  • Edit documents, format documents to print correctly, file documents with public agencies.
  • Keep logs of correspondence with the oversight agencies, FERC and DSOD.
  • Maintain comment tracking logs for document review comments provided by FERC, DSOD, and the BOC.
  • Provide input to PMC deliverables
  • Participate in weekly coordination meetings with Valley Water.
  • Handle logistics for and participate in meetings [this includes Doodle Polls to determine best dates, scheduling the meeting, sending out advance agenda and documents, preparing print orders, and on boarding of staff.
  • Take notes during meetings, provide team support to management and other team members, possibly record minutes, and contribute to the overall session.
  • Print documents or utilize Valley Water Reprographics printing services.
  • Conduct research into historical aspects of the project.

Senior Project Administrator Requirements:

  • Must have 5-7 years of previous experience working in a Project/Senior Project Administrator role or equivalent position.
  • Previous experience providing coordination and support to multiple team leads and managers.
  • Be self-directed, a self-starter with strong ability to perform all tasks with little direction or direct supervision.
  • Display strong performance ethics while working concurrently on multiple assignments.
  • Ability to display excellent verbal and written communications, as well as customer service skills.
  • Maintain flexibility to adjusting work hours and tasks as needed.
  • Display efficient time management skills and an ability to adapt to changing workflow.
  • Possess strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Education

Work Location

The primary work location is Valley Water’s Headquarters, which is 5750 Almaden Expressway, San Jose, CA 95118, for three days per week and the ability to work remotely at other times.

Compensation

This full-time position has a pay range of $40.00 - $49.00 per hour, depending on the experience of the final candidate, and at the discretion of the hiring manager.

Junior, Assistant, or Associate Water Infrastructure Engineer

This role offers the challenge of developing detailed design documents for unique water infrastructure projects that require creative and innovative thinking, research, and communication to solve new and complex design issues.

In your first six months, you’ll evaluate and design small- to large-scale water utility infrastructure projects throughout the greater Bay Area, in collaboration with senior staff and principal engineers. This will include preparation of drawings (AutoCAD), specifications, and cost estimates. Your role will also include conducting field investigations, providing construction support services, writing technical reports, completing hydrologic calculations and models, and coordinating projects. You’ll have the opportunity to learn and use GIS and modeling software.

Long-term, you’ll manage projects, perform as lead design engineer, and assist and mentor junior engineers. You’ll learn (or apply your experience) to rehabilitate and replace pipeline and pump station infrastructure. With exposure to a wide range of projects, including asset management, hydrologic modeling, channel restoration, and infrastructure design, you’ll have the opportunity to manage a broad portfolio of interesting work supporting a multitude of clients.

Minimum Requirements - Junior Engineers:

While experience is not required, an EIT certificate is. Solid water resources engineering coursework is essential, as is a passion for this profession. Previous civil engineering work experience including internships and participation in engineering-related extracurricular activities is preferred.

Minimum Requirements - Assistant and Associate Engineers:

  • Seeking candidates with 1-10 years’ relevant experience delivering civil engineering design projects.
  • Experience in the following categories is preferred, but not required: Detailed designs, plans, and specs for new and rehabilitated municipal and private utility infrastructure projects, well and tank design, and pipeline and pump station design for storm drain, potable water, recycled water, and wastewater systems.
  • Interested in designing pressure and gravity pipe systems, assessing pipeline conditions, preparing contracts (including plans, specs, and cost estimates), and providing construction support.
  • Associate Engineers must have a PE license and the ability to manage projects and delegate work to junior staff.

  • BSCE, BSC&EE, or BSME

CAD Drafter/Designer – Water Resources Engineering

Responsibilities

Schaaf & Wheeler is looking for an entry level to highly proficient CAD Drafter/Designer to develop design and construction drawings.

This position involves the extensive use of AutoCAD Civil 3D, drafting systems, GIS systems and client standards to prepare drawings and revise/update existing drawings for a variety of water resources engineering projects. Drawings include maps, construction documents, figures and other graphics used in a variety of products, including construction documents and reports.

Minimum Requirements

  • Certificate or Associate’s degree from an accredited college/university or completion of technical trade school courses, or equivalent experience
  • Certification as an AutoCAD Civil 3D Professional or equivalent preferred; certification will be required within 6 months of hire. Schaaf & Wheeler will pay for the training after hire, if needed.
  • In lieu of experience, we will consider recent AutoCAD Civil 3D Professional certification, or the equivalent.
  • Ability to interpret and develop detailed drawings from sketches and mark-ups provided by engineers.
  • Ability to complete basic calculations related to engineering drawings including areas, lengths, distances, line and curve tables, elevations, datum conversions, coordinate systems, slopes, grades, and volumes is mandatory.
  • Proficiency with MS Office
  • The ability to communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) with clients and project team members
  • Ability to assist and advise project team members on use of AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Ability to develop and implement CAD standards and best practice

Preferred Requirements

  • 2+ years of recent intermediate-to-advanced level professional experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoCAD, and other drafting software to develop detailed designs for complex civil engineering projects
  • Familiarity with GIS systems
  • Civil 3D experience
