Principal Engineers


Our principals are co-owners of the company with a combined 126 years of commitment to Schaaf & Wheeler. But they are more than financial investors. Principals regularly lead teams on high-level projects and provide mentorship to junior and assistant engineers. With hard work and dedication, you could become a co-owner one day, too.

Senior Engineers


Senior engineers run their own projects, lead teams, and manage day-to-day tasks. They also interact with clients regularly to verify our products meet stakeholder expectations.

Associate Engineers


Our associate engineers do the heavy technical lifting on projects. With tools like AutoCAD and ArcGIS, they ensure our drafts and reports are developed correctly and efficiently. They use models such as Innovyze ICM, HEC-RAS, InfoWater, and many others to solve complex engineering problems.

Junior & Assistant Engineers


Junior engineers make sure our analyses and designs are completed in cost-effective and innovative ways that meet client expectations, with full support from the project team. Billing Coordinator

This position will be based in our Santa Clara office (across from Great America) and is not a hybrid position.

We are looking for an efficient Billing Coordinator, reporting to our Accounting Manager, to take on our billing / collections needs. The billing coordinator will be responsible for creating and sending invoices, tracking payment processes, keeping detailed records, and working with the team to resolve any discrepancies. The right applicant will also be able to handle client complaints and follow up on any issues relating to the billing process.

To be successful as a billing coordinator you should be able to multitask without compromising the accuracy of your work. An outstanding billing coordinator should have a strong numerical aptitude,be a tech savvy person, and display excellent customer service skills.

will be a part-time to full-time position, with a pay range of $27.00 - $35.00 per hour, depending on the experience of the final candidate, and at the discretion of the hiring manager.

Billing Coordinator Responsibilities:

  • Drafting and sending invoices, ensuring their accuracy.

Water infrastructure is critical as it provides our Bay Area clients and communities with reliable and efficient water, stormwater, and sewer infrastructure. This role offers the challenge of developing detailed design documents for unique water infrastructure projects that require creative and innovative thinking, research, and communication to solve new and complex design issues.

In your first six months, you’ll evaluate and design small- to large-scale water utility infrastructure projects throughout the greater Bay Area, in collaboration with senior staff and principal engineers. This will include preparation of drawings (AutoCAD), specifications, and cost estimates. Your role will also include conducting field investigations, providing construction support services, writing technical reports, completing hydrologic calculations and models, and coordinating projects. You’ll have the opportunity to learn and use GIS and modeling software.

Long-term, you’ll manage projects, perform as lead design engineer, and assist and mentor junior engineers. You’ll learn (or apply your experience) to rehabilitate and replace pipeline and pump station infrastructure. With exposure to a wide range of projects, including asset management, hydrologic modeling, channel restoration, and infrastructure design, you’ll have the opportunity to manage a broad portfolio of interesting work supporting a multitude of clients.

Responsibilities:

  • You’ll independently advance multiple projects at the same time, performing research and reaching out for help as needed
  • You’ll effectively manage your time to meet project milestones/deadlines
  • As an Associate Engineer, you’ll also use your knowledge and skills to guide and train junior staff
  • A Professional Engineering license is required for the associate engineer position

Minimum Requirements - Junior Engineers:

While experience is not required, an EIT certificate is. Solid water resources engineering coursework is essential, as is a passion for this profession. Previous civil engineering work experience including internships and participation in engineering-related extracurricular activities is preferred.

Minimum Requirements - Assistant and Associate Engineers:

  • Seeking candidates with 1-10 years’ relevant experience delivering civil engineering design projects.
  • Experience in the following categories is preferred, but not required: Detailed designs, plans, and specs for new and rehabilitated municipal and private utility infrastructure projects, well and tank design, and pipeline and pump station design for storm drain, potable water, recycled water, and wastewater systems.
  • Interested in designing pressure and gravity pipe systems, assessing pipeline conditions, preparing contracts (including plans, specs, and cost estimates), and providing construction support.
  • Associate Engineers must have a PE license and the ability to manage projects and delegate work to junior staff.

Minimum Requirements- All Engineering Positions:

  • BSCE, BSC&EE, or BSME
  • EIT certificate at minimum

Assistant, Associate, or Senior Water Infrastructure Engineer

Long-term, you’ll probably work on multi-million dollar infrastructure projects including pump station design, pipeline design, levee design, and trash capture device design, both in the private and public sector. CAD Drafter/Designer – Water Resources Engineering

Responsibilities

Schaaf & Wheeler is looking for an entry level to highly proficient CAD Drafter/Designer to develop design and construction drawings.

This position involves the extensive use of AutoCAD Civil 3D, drafting systems, GIS systems and client standards to prepare drawings and revise/update existing drawings for a variety of water resources engineering projects. Drawings include maps, construction documents, figures and other graphics used in a variety of products, including construction documents and reports.

Minimum Requirements

  • Certificate or Associate’s degree from an accredited college/university or completion of technical trade school courses, or equivalent experience
  • Certification as an AutoCAD Civil 3D Professional or equivalent preferred; certification will be required within 6 months of hire. Schaaf & Wheeler will pay for the training after hire, if needed.
  • In lieu of experience, we will consider recent AutoCAD Civil 3D Professional certification, or the equivalent.
  • Ability to interpret and develop detailed drawings from sketches and mark-ups provided by engineers.
  • Ability to complete basic calculations related to engineering drawings including areas, lengths, distances, line and curve tables, elevations, datum conversions, coordinate systems, slopes, grades, and volumes is mandatory.
  • Proficiency with MS Office
  • The ability to communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) with clients and project team members

  • 2+ years of recent intermediate-to-advanced level professional experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D, AutoCAD, and other drafting software to develop detailed designs for complex civil engineering projects
  • Familiarity with GIS systems
  • Civil 3D experience
